The New Mexico Department of Wildlife's Skills Development program leads the Department's effort to provide hands-on skills for the general public. The public has expressed interest in learning how to safely recreate in the outdoors. This position is responsible for creating opportunities for novices to learn basic skills and for current participants to learn more hands-on skills, increasing their comfort level for recreating in the outdoors. This includes coordinating programs that can be duplicated and shared with volunteers and contractors.

Vegetation Sampling Field Technician and Crew Leader

Animas Biological Studies is hiring three (3) field technicians and one (1) field crew leader to conduct post-herbicide treatment vegetation sampling in piñon-juniper habitat on White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in south-central New Mexico. Completion of sampling plots is estimated to require 4–6 weeks, with work beginning in September and completing by October. Fieldwork would include 1) line-point intercept transects to quantify ground cover, and 2) point-centered plots to collect data on tree density, height, diameter, and vigor. Fieldwork will require off-trail hiking in mostly flat to moderately sloping terrain, with a few areas of steeper, rocky slopes. Field technicians and the crew leader must be able to work long hours in the field under hot and dry conditions. The crew leader will be responsible for managing field technicians, maintaining an efficient field schedule, quality control, and communicating regularly with the Project Manager. Fieldwork will require dispersed camping on adjacent BLM lands and/or at a nearby BLM campground (with a bathhouse and showers). Occasional hotel lodging in the nearest town can also be supported.

Hawks Aloft, Inc. seeks a unique individual to join our conservation team. This person is multi-faceted and interested in participating in all aspects of Hawks Aloft, including educational programs for schools and our community, avian research, raptor husbandry, and raptor rescue. We are active in the conservation community, working on topics relative to the electric utility industry, local conservation issues, the New Mexico Avian Conservation Partners, and other nonprofits in New Mexico.
